Last week, a final-year student messaged me: "I've applied to 140 internships. Zero replies. My resume is good. What's happening?" Here's what's happening: your resume probably never reached a human. In 2026, companies are getting 200-400 applications per remote developer opening. Almost none of them are read by a person first. AI screening tools scan, score, and shortlist — and most students are still building resumes for humans, not for the filter sitting in front of them. This isn't a reason to panic. It's a reason to adjust. A few things actually move the needle right now: → Stop listing skills. Show them in context. "Built a REST API that handles 500+ requests/min" beats "Skilled in Node.js" every time — for both the AI and the human who reads it after. → Your GitHub and LinkedIn activity are now part of your application, whether you submit them or not. Recruiters and screening tools check both. → Consistency beats virality. One sharp, specific comment on the right post does more for your visibility than a generic "Excited to announce" update. → Tailor the top third of your resume per role. Screening models weight the opening lines heavily — generic objectives waste that space. The students who'll do well this placement season aren't the ones sending more applications. They're the ones who understood the filter and built for it. If you're prepping for internships right now, what's been the hardest part — getting noticed, or getting past the first round?
