Google just held its major annual developer conference, Google I/O 2026. The company rolled out its massive new focus on an "agentic era," overhauling its core search engine and releasing major AI upgrades. 1. Google Search Redesign Google rolled out what it is calling the biggest change to the search box in 25 years. The Expanding Box: The traditional search bar now stretches and expands dynamically to handle long, conversational queries, allowing users to drop in text, images, files, video, and open Chrome tabs all at once. Information Agents: Later this summer, premium subscribers (AI Pro and Ultra) can deploy 24/7 background agents. For example, you can task an agent to monitor real-time apartment listings or stock movements based on complex criteria, and it will alert you when conditions are met. Generative UI: Leveraging a platform called Google Antigravity, Search can now assemble custom mini-applications, live interactive dashboards, and simulations on the fly based on user queries. 2. Gemini 3.5 Flash & Omni Google introduced Gemini 3.5 Flash as the new default model powering its AI Mode globally, touting major performance leaps and cost reductions, particularly for coding and development workflows. Alongside it, Gemini Omni was showcased, giving users the ability to generate and edit video content using basic, conversational prompts. 3. Deepening Ecosystem Integration Personal Intelligence: Google is expanding its opt-in Personal Intelligence features to nearly 200 countries, allowing users to seamlessly connect their Gmail and Google Photos to AI Mode to parse personal data natively. Hardware Teasers: Google teased that its new "intelligent eyewear" AR glasses will be coming later this fall, alongside upcoming integrations for Android XR. 4. Investments in India On the infrastructure side, Google is reportedly exploring major investments in India following high-level meetings between CEO Sundar Pichai and Government IT Ministers. The multi-billion dollar push is expected to target local AI infrastructure, drone manufacturing, and data center development.
